MARQUESAN FISH GOD “UHUMAKAIKAI”

This carving was inspired by an ancient stone statue found on the island of Hiva Oa in French Polynesia on a sacred marae.

The gods of fishing were numerous. Each type of fish had its own god. However, the main god was Tana'oa (Kanaloa), also called Te Fatu Moana (Lord of the Sea).

This carving was done in Ironwood (casaurina equisetifolia).
