This canoe replica is carved from “Queen Ebony” wood (Xanthostemon melanoxylon). The wood is a dense black color with dark tan streaks. The unique shape is based on a myth.

A dog appeared to the Solomon Islanders in the “heroic epoch” and taught them all they know. It is said that he threw himself down on his back and slit open his belly to expose his backbone and ribs, demonstrating the notion of the keel and the plank ribs. He then stuck his hind and forelegs up in the air to create the poop and prow.

The model comes with a custom-made cradle display base.
