The carvers of the Marovo Lagoon have the uncanny ability to duplicate the shape of nearly any underwater creature. This is a spotted coral grouper (plectropomus maculatus) - a fish that is abundant in their waters.
It is carved from Solomon Island rosewood (pterocarpus indicus). The texture of the skin and fins has been delicately incised.
Displayed on a custom stand.
