The carver chose to honor an elder in his village who had passed away. It is easy to see so many thoughts and feelings in his face.
This is a finely detailed carving of a Solomon Island man with typical Melanesian features. The head is oversized and the eyes have shell inlay. It is carved from Solomon Islands kerosene wood (cordia subcordata).
