In ancient times, tiki (or ki'i) were carved to represent the image of a certain god and as an embodiment of that specific god's mana, or power.
Kanaloa was the god of the ocean, long distance sailing, and healing.  He was considered a taming force. In Tahiti his name is Ta’aroa, in Samoa – Tagaloa, in New Zealand - Tangaroa. Among the body forms of Kanaloa are banana, octopus and porpoise.
Kanaloa is also considered to be the god of the Underworld and a teacher of magic.
